Metal Stamping: The Basics

Here, at qualitetch.co.uk, we are leaders in the manufacturing industry across the UK, and as such we provide a variety of metalwork solutions that are best suited to your needs. One of our many services is metal stamping. As one of the processes we use for high volume orders, the  stamping manufacturing process  produces high quality results that are cost-effective, too.

The metal  stamping manufacturing process  is one of the most common used within the industry and uses cold sheets of metal. Hot metal forming is known as forging. This is also a very economical method compared to others around and is used for parts that require high-volume output needs.

There is a handful of methods used in metal stamping. The most common method involves a single stage operation, while others comprise a series of stages, using multiple dies moving in various directions.

How it Works

Metal stamping requires a lot of different processes to be used to achieve the desired results. Set to specific design briefs, as specified by you, our team provide the solution you need by utilising a combination of the following processes and operations, as necessary.

The metal stamping manufacturing process uses a lubricant whilst in operation. This is to ensure the metal does not scratch the tool or die; all the while protecting the metal surface from scrapes and scratches.

Processes

Bending – The material is bent using a straight line

Flanging – The material is bent using a curved line

Coining – A pattern is squeezed into the material; as you might see on a coin

Embossing – The design is depressed into the material

Ironing – The material is compressed and reduced in thickness; like a drinks can

Reducing – The process of gradually reducing the diameter of an open tube

Curling – The process of deforming metal into tubes; like you would see on a door hinge

Hemming – The folding over of a materials edge onto itself; like you would see on a car door

What is it Used For?

The metal stamping process is used for a variety of sectors that we work with, including, but not limited to; automotive, electronics, construction, engineering, aerospace, Consumer goods and agriculture.

This process can be combined with others, for instance, photo chemical etching; to achieve an even more remarkable result.
