Wish You Were Here

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few months, you should be well aware of the fact that, for the first time, we have a British astronaut aboard the International Space Station. Tim Peake is one of less than ten Brits ever to fly into space and beat over 8,000 applicants for the job.

Not only is Peake representing the UK in spectacular fashion, but he is also documenting his challenges, achievements and general life in space on his 6-month long mission, on his website.

As one of the leading manufacturers of metal parts in the UK and around the world, Qualitetch provides vital components for the Aerospace industry, amongst others, by utilising a combination of techniques such as etching and metal laser cutting. Why is this important? Without those parts, there is every possibility that humankind might never have explored space and the solar system.

What is He Doing?

Tim Peake’s 6-month long space mission, as part of the European Space Agency, is an incredible feat; on his time with the ISS he has been involved in space walks, repairing equipment and documenting life in space alongside the vital experiments and testing of new technology. He has been updating his website Principia and Twitter, in particular, as his aim is to inspire children to get more involved in science.

The world of physics and science, in general, can be difficult for children to get their heads around but the hope is that Tim will inspire them to pick up their textbooks, ask questions and get involved with science on a much deeper level. It might seem like being an astronaut is a childhood dream that isn’t realistic, but the hope is that involvement from a younger age will drive them towards achieving their dreams and turning them into reality.

If you want to keep up to date with Tim Peake’s mission, please head over to his website or Twitter. He has been sending updates of his life in space, including playing ping pong, making coffee, having a shower and also an incredible video of lightning striking the Earth.
